Mulberry cards and paper products
The SA (Mulberry) handmade paper products are crafted by women in a factory in Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand where about 200 women are employed. The production of mulberry items improves the ability of women to earn
money in their surroundings and preserves the handing down of the handicraft to younger generations. The women might otherwise migrate to the cities or be forced into prostitution.
Mulberry paper is environmentally friendly. It is made from the bark of the mulberry tree that is peeled every 9 to 12 months during a period of about 15 years. Hence, no trees have to be cut to produce the paper. To decorate the mulberry items, the batik technique is applied on the paper. To do so, an artist draws wax designs on the paper, dyes it, and irons it between pieces of newsprint that absorb the wax, leaving the designs. The technique has to be applied several times to obtain multi-colored designs.
