For more than two decades Hennie Deboeck worked in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East as a project manager and financial analyst for the World Bank. During her many travels she encountered many women artisans and was struck by their creativity, their enthusiasm but also their poverty and economic position in life. Upon retirement from the World Bank, Hennie decided to address these issues by establishing in January 2001 e-maginativegifts, a dynamic business creating markets for products made by women artisans from around the world.
E-maginativegifts buys high quality, hand made products directly from women, from women’s cooperatives, as well as from suppliers that import from women cooperatives. The company also buys from physically impaired men and women.
Among others, the company imports fashionable scarves, evening bags, cosmetic and lipstick cases and other quality women’s accessories, smocked girls’ dresses and children’s sweaters, ties for men, picture frames, and other accessories for the home and office. The crafts come from all parts of the globe. Currently, e-maginativegifts sells goods from Bolivia, Cambodia, China, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Hungary, India, Madagascar, Mongolia, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Thailand, Ukraine and Vietnam.
Some selected goods from women suppliers in the US have since 2006 also been added so as to increase sales and channel proceeds from these sales to women in poor countries. In this way e-maginativegifts will be able to help even more women to better their lives.
E-maginativegifts combines a conventional approach of selling through crafts fairs and home shows with a modern marketing through e-stores, e-auctions at EBAY and through this website.
